After growing up on a steady diet of gospel and Jamaican music Frederick "Toots" Hibbert began performing alongside Henry "Raleigh" Gordon and Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias in the early '60s. Their unique sound found them in the studio soon after forming which resulted in the release of debut single 'Hallelujah' - a prelude to their 1963 album Never Grow Old. During the latter half of the '60s the group won the first ever Jamaican Independence Festival Popular Song Competition with their soulful hit 'Bam Bam', closely followed by a sea of other reggae hits including 'Pressure Drop', '54-46 That's My Number' and 'Monkey Man' - their international breakthrough single.

The soul-infused band experienced a resurgence of interest in the late '70s/early '80s after covers of their songs were included on albums from The Specials and The Clash. Following a long deserved holiday the group released a re-recorded compilation of hits with appearances from Eric Clapton, Keith Richard and Shaggy - winning the group a Grammy for best reggae album.
