A closer look at 'Salford's Guggenheim'

In 1988, the Salford City Council developed a bold regeneration plan for one of its derelict docks to boast a cultural and artistic project that would allow the region to add a modern entertainment complex to its roster. From this vision, The Lowry was created with partial funding from the National Lottery along with private donors and work was completed in 1999. The gallery portion of the complex provides 2,000 square metres of floor space for collections and exhibitions. Featured among them is an extensive array of works by L.S. Lowry for whom the compound is named. Dramatic presentations take place in one of its three theatres: The Lyric Theatre (1730 cap.), The Quays (440 cap.) and the Aldridge Studio (150 cap.). In the quarter century since its inauguration, The Lowry has hosted the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Variety Performance and Opera North to name a few. The Lowry is committed to becoming a cultural and artistic warehouse for the Greater Manchester area. In addition to the studios and galleries, it also offers community space for organizations and other concerns to foster activities aimed at developing local talent. There are also several conference and multi-purpose rooms and a souvenir shop. Visitors need not be confined inside: a bar/restaurant (Pier 8) with seating for 150 has recently been added. Also you can take a stroll along the Lowry Footbridge across the canal. This award winning landmark, often compared with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has become a hit with visitors and locals alike. The Lowry is situated at Pier 8, The Quays, Salford, England M50 3AZ. The building is open Monday-Sunday from 10am-6pm unless there is a performance. It has a drop-off area as well as two dedicated parking lots.
