Electronic dance music is extremely popular these days -- but before it was at the centre of countless clubs, festivals and concerts across the world, Schiller started making waves as a standout creator of experimental electronic music. Named for poet Friedrich Schiller, Schiller is a German DJ who is known for layering trance and electronic music with guest vocals or spoken word poetry -- making for an experience that is as electrifying as it is inventive.
The Evolution of Schiller
Schiller started out as a duo that set out to layer trance music with spoken word poetry. When the Schiller -- made up of Mirko von Schlieffen and Christopher von Deylen -- experienced creative differences in the early 2000s, von Deylen took over the moniker and transformed Schiller's identity into an electronic music DJ, creating unique dance music at clubs and venues across the world. Schiller creates his own tracks today, but he does not do any of his own vocals. Instead, he collaborates with other artists and brings in guests to add vocal or lyrical elements to his creations.
Schiller's Breakthrough
The DJ first started making music as Schiller in 1999 when he released an album called Zeitgeist. While that album received some acclaim in the dance music world, it wasn't until he released Weltreise in 2002 that he saw both critical and commercial attention. That album's single, "Dream of You," which was a collaboration with artist Peter Heppner, was awarded the ECHO Award for Best Dance Single of 2002. After Schiller's first big break, he continued to create records, collaborate and perform across the world.
Schiller's Biggest Albums
After he released his first successful album in 2002, Schiller created and released several other widely-acclaimed records. Schiller's 2003 record Leben featured one of his biggest hit singles, "I Feel You," which charted at No. 5 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart internationally. He also had three records reach the top spot on the Germany Albums chart: Sonne, released in 2012, Opus, released in 2013 and Future, released in 2016. Schiller also hit big when he had the opportunity to collaborate with pop music superstar Colbie Caillat. Together, they wrote the song "You," which was released with a music video.
The Experience at a Schiller Show
Expect a club-like atmosphere if you score Schiller tickets. That's because Schiller's music is extremely dance-focused, and people love to go to his shows to experience his unique and powerful rhythms. Schiller's music is also energizing, so expect a crowd of people who are revved up, excited and looking to have a great time.
If you've already got your Schiller tickets but you're looking for artists who also create standout electronic dance music, check out German DJ ATB (Andre Tanneberger) or British electronic music group Chicane.
