Trivia

Although he got his start playing saxophone with his original band, Roland Gift gained fame as the lead singer of Fine Young Cannibals, who derived their name from an old Natalie Wood film called "All The Fine Young Cannibals." The source for their name was somewhat prophetic as Roland later embarked on a career in the film industry in 1987. His largest role was as the evil Xavier St. Cloud in "Highlander: The Series." He carried that role through five episodes before Xavier came to a well deserved end.

Singer

Roland Gift enjoyed his greatest success as lead singer of Fine Young Cannibals in the mid 1980s. He formed the band with guitarist Andy Cox and bassist David Steele in 1984. Fine Young Cannibals charted fairly well in both the U.S. and U.K. pop charts in 1985 and 1989. They ended up breaking the top 10 on five occasions in the U.K. and managed to make it to the number one slot twice in the U.S. Roland didn't try his hand at a solo work until the release of his self-titled album in 2002.

Breakthrough

Fine Young Cannibals hit it big with their very first release, a self-titled album that went gold in the U.K. and platinum in Canada. The two singles from that premier work, "Johnny Come Home" and "Suspicious Minds," brought them instant fame. Roland's unique voice is what drove their success. There was nobody else in the industry with a similar sound, nor has there been since. His raspy yet smooth vocals fit perfectly with the music riding underneath.

Hit Album

Their most popular and final original album, "The Raw and The Cooked," did amazingly well. Again, there were two major singles that drove the album's sales. "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing" were monster hits. They vaulted the album to the number one slot in the U.S., U.K., Canadian, Australian and even the Austrian pop charts and landed in the number two slot with the New Zealanders and the Swiss. Not much is known about the band's breakup, but this level of success is often hard on a young band. After storming the charts the world over, the band never released another original album.
