Mogwai Biography - Highly Technical Gremlins
Named after the creatures from American horror-comedy Gremlins, the band was formed in Glasgow in 1996 by long-time friends Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison and Martin Bulloch. Later that year guitarist John Cummings joined the ranks and the band released their first single 'Tuner' in March. Follow-up single 'Angels vs. Aliens' launched the group in the UK, landing in the Top 10 on the British indie charts.
In October 1997, full-length debut Mogwai Young Team was released with Aidan Moffet of Arab Strap making a guest appearance on single 'R U Still in 2 It'. Two-disc remix Kicking a Dead Pig was released the following year to a critical fanfare and the band began to enjoy international recognition. Within a couple of years the prolific quartet had released eight EPs, five albums and three compilation albums in less than eight years. In addition to this amazing feat they've also produced several soundtracks and remixes for, amongst others, Manic Street Preachers. After years under Glasgow label Chemikal Underground the band started their own Rock Action Records in 2010 and the following year their seventh album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will was put out under their own steam.
