Maitre Gims Tour Dates
Maitre Gims is France's biggest rap superstar, a man who helped establish Paris as a hip-hop hub. He combines all the hallmarks of American rap with a distinctive French flavor, drawing on his experiences in the City of Lights. Maitre Gims tickets are like hip-hop gold dust and highly sought after by fans of the genre.
Maitre Gims' Background
Maitre Gims - real name Gandhi Djuna - was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and moved to France when he was two years old, settling in Paris' 3rd arrondissement. At college, he joined the group Sexion d'Assaut - a hip-hop collective made up of eight Parisian rappers. In the band, Maitre Gims became famous for his flashy sunglasses: he often dons a pair of shades in videos and during promo appearances.
Sexion d'Assaut cultivated an underground fanbase for several years before they released their debut studio album, L'ecole des points vitaux, in 2010. Once they broke into the mainstream, they achieved major chart success, scoring four top five entries on the French album chart. L'Apogee, released in 2012, hit No. 1 and was certified diamond by the Syndicat National de l'edition Phonographique for selling more than 500,000 copies. The album features the hit singles "Ma direction," "Wati House" and "Avant qu'elle parte."
Maitre Gims' History
After the success of Sexion d'Assaut, Maitre Gims released his debut album, Subliminal, in 2013. The 18-track set - a blend of rap and R&B with elements of pop - was a massive commercial success and soon certified diamond. It features the tracks "Meurtre par strangulation," "Bella" and "J'me tire," the latter of which hit No. 1 on the French singles chart. Subliminal also charted in Belgium and Switzerland. Critics commended the mishmash of styles on the set and saw it as a major breakthrough in the rap genre.
Maitre Gims released his second album, Mon cur avait raison, in 2015. The double album features two sides: Pilule bleue and Pilule rouge. "Est-ce que tu m'aimes?," the first single released from the album, was an instant smash, climbing to No. 3 in Gims' homeland. This was followed by three more top 10 hits: "Laissez passer," "Brise" and "Sapes comme jamais." Mon cur avait raison features collaborations with Young Thug, Gucci Mane and Sia. In 2016, the album was re-released under the title A contrecur with seven brand new tracks.
Maitre Gims also has his own record label, Monstre Marin Corporation. Bedjik - Maitre Gims' younger brother - Amalya and Yanslo are among the artists on the label's roster.
