John Legend biography
John Roger Stephens was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1978 and began playing piano as a child. He also sang in a church choir and performed in various groups while at university. It was there that he met Lauryn Hill, for whom he played piano on the single "Everything is Everything" from her 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in his first commercial appearance.
After graduating he met then up-and-coming rapper Kanye West and signed to West's label GOOD Music. A prolific collaborator, Legend sang on hits by the likes of Jay Z, Magnetic Man, Kanye West and Alicia Keys, before releasing his own solo album, Get Lifted, in 2004. The album sold over 3 million copies worldwide, was certified platinum in the US and won a Grammy Award for best R&B album. Two years later he released his second studio album Once Again, featuring Mary J. Blige on the international bonus track "King & Queen".
In 2008, Legend performed to critical acclaim at a benefit concert to support Barack Obama's presidential campaign, where he debuted the track "If You're Out There" from his upcoming third album Evolver. Once again the album showcased Legend's impeccable musicality and, as the title suggested, represented an evolution in his career. Success continued into 2013 with his huge hit "All of Me", before he compounded his reputation as a master collaborator the following year; working with Common on the song "Glory".
2016 saw Legend release his sixth studio album – Darkness and Light – while he also performed at Stevie Wonder’s House Full of Toys benefit concert to raise money for families in need.
