Jeff Dunham: unrivaled master of his craft

Texas-born Dunham discovered his talent for ventriloquism at the age of eight, when his parents bought him a puppet for Christmas. Learning his craft using albums and books in front of a mirror, by his teens he was attending events such as ConVENTion, where he met influential comedy figures and began to build his reputation.

After wowing the crowds at school talent contests, he eventually moved to Los Angeles to seek fame and fortune. Although initially struggling to get a foothold in the industry with characters such as Peanut and Jose Jalapeno, a regular spot at the famous Comedy and Magic Club opened the door to a spot on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson after a number of false starts. From here, his career seriously took off, as he made appearances on numerous national TV shows while continuing to wow the club circuit.

By the 2000s he was performing regular Comedy Central specials, which became huge viral hits on YouTube. Towards the end of the decade he broke into the arenas, as his near-the-knuckle wit finally proved a hit with mainstream audiences.
