Brainchild of bassist Steve Harris, who decided to form the group on Christmas Day 1975, Iron Maiden signed a record deal with EMI four years later following the release of successful demo The Soundhouse Tapes. Considered part of the new wave of British heavy metal, it was no surprise when their eponymous debut album shot straight to number four in the charts upon its 1980 release.

1982 album The Number of the Beast featured newly-hired vocalist Bruce Dickinson and provided the group with their first UK album chart number one, with the LP going on to sell over 14 million copies worldwide. Having spawned their own video game, a string of music awards and their own branded charter jet, Iron Maiden have gone on to become one of the most successful rock bands of all time.
