History of Basketball - More Than Shooting Hoops

From the gymnasiums of Springfield College to state-of-the-art arenas, this high-adrenaline sport has grown to become one of the world's most popular sports. By the 1920s hundreds of professional basketball teams had cropped up all over the States, playing any venue big enough to house them. It wasn't until 1946 that an official organisation was formed and some years later, in 1949 the NBA became the professional organisation for the sport.

In 1893 the president of Birkenhead YMCA, C.J Proctor, introduced the sport to Britain for the first time, but it wasn't until World War I that the sport reached started to grow in popularity on our shores. Today, more and more Britons have become avid followers of the sport and the British Basketball League has been running since 1987.
