Despite having to overcome serious health issues as a teenager, Newkirk started a career as a dancer for hire before eventually getting work as a backing vocalist. While she didn't grow up with dreams of being a singer, she soon found producers intrigued by the character and intensity of her unique voice. After years of toiling, she found label attention through her incendiary performances on the MTV talent show The Cut, where she reached the finals. The songbird signed her first record deal shortly before turning 30, a relatively late time to break into the music industry, but quickly made up for lost time. The 'Sick and Tired' vocalist released her 2000 debut Not That Kind and sophomore album Freak of Nature followed in quick succession to massive commercial success.
