The European leg of their tour will include stops in many locales, including Brussels, London, and an appearance at the Pitchfork Festival Paris. No matter the venue, War on Drugs tickets tend to sell out quickly.
War on Drugs biography
The War on Drugs was created by two friends - Kurt Vile and Adam Granduciel - in 2003. Their friendship formed due to a mutual love of Bob Dylan, and the duo went through a number of different backup musicians, before settling on their lineup. War on Drugs released their first demo in 2005, with a debut follow-up coming in the form of, Wagon Wheel Blues, three years later. Although founding member, Kurt Vile left soon after the band's inception to start his own project, there is no animosity between the former and current members. In fact, Granduciel often plays with Vile's current band, the Violators.
In the decade and a half since the War on Drugs was formed, the band has played sold-out shows throughout their native United States and Europe. The critical and commerical success of latest release A Deeper Understanding has helped the group expand their cult following, particularly due to the record's eclectic music style. With music ranges from punk rock to metal, to soulful blues-like melodies, the group have become a hit for music lovers of a variety of genres.
People often wonder whether the band's name was an ironic reference to the United States' attempt to rid itself of illegal drug use, but The War on Drugs chose its name simply because it sounded like a good band name at the time. Frontman Adam Granduciel has been quoted on saying that the name seemed like a better idea than "The Danza Rigatonis," which is why his band mates agreed to it.
War on Drugs breakthrough and albums
Although Wagon Wheel Blues allowed the War on Drugs to go on its first European tour, the album actually failed to chart either in the US or the UK. That accolade can go to the release of their second album, Slave Ambient, which hit number four on the US Heat and 127 on the UK charts. Following up with their third album Lost in the Dream, War on Drugs broke into the UK charts in 2014, with the record coming in at number 4 on the UK charts. Fourth album A Deeper Understanding was nominated for the International Album of the Year award at the 2018 UK Americana Awards and, at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards won the Grammy for Best Rock Album.
