Skindred: successors to Bad Brains – or not?

Skindred fills an essential void in the music universe with their so-called "ragga metal". Skindred have inevitably been compared to the original pioneers of reggae-metal, Bad Brains, and of course this is a very difficult claim to dispute. The band, however, have been having none of it, and insist that the only reason for this comparison is that it's the obvious reflexive parallel to draw. Which is both fair comment and stretching the imagination a little bit – they do sound a bit like the earlier thrash reggae outfit, and that is obviously a very good thing indeed. At the same time they have clearly attempted to delve deeper into the metal side of things, even jokingly referring to their music as a reggae version of nu-metal, which is not a claim one makes lightly in the wake of that movement's implosion. Still, they've toured with some of the survivors of the trend like the excellent Papa Roach, who were always destined to be more than just a passing fashion in the early 2000s.
