Skillet Serves Up a New Take on Christian Rock

Skillet is a long-time Christian rock band that's still wowing audiences around the world today. With two Grammy-nominated albums, Skillet has made a name for itself in Christian rock. Known for their high-energy shows, Skillet is sure to deliver an amazing performance.

Skillet has multiple shows through the year, often spending a day or two in one country before jetting off to another for a show. While the band has its share of solo shows, these musicians also frequently perform at musical festivals that include the Rockstar Uproar Festival, Impact Festival, Moondance Jam and Volt Fest. Upcoming shows will take place in major cities such as London, Warsaw, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Band/Singer

Skillet had its beginning as a duo, with John Cooper and Ken Steorts, in Memphis, Tennessee. After the coming and goings of various members, Skillet today consists of four members. Cooper provides vocals and plays bass, while his wife, who joined in 1999, plays the guitar, keyboard and provides backup vocals. In 1998, drummer and singer Jen Ledger joined. The last member, Seth Morrison, joined Skillet in 2011 as the lead guitarist.

Trivia

Lead singer John Cooper is the sole member of the band who has been around since its formation in 1996. One of the former band members, guitarist Ben Kasica, was just 16 when he joined Skillet. The band got its name by having members from different musical backgrounds, including punk, funk, and rock. Thus, they joked that their music was akin to mixing several different ingredients in a skillet.

Breakthrough

Skillet's first album was self-titled and released in 1996. It was soon followed by Hey You, I Love Your Soul, which debuted a slightly softer sound. After the band replaced some members, the music began to sound a bit more electronic, and it showed on albums such as Invincible, Ardent Worship and Alien Youth. The sixth album, Collide was released in 2003 with a heavier sound and popular songs such as "Savior" and "Collide." However, Skillet's breakthrough album was Comatose. Released in 2006, it featured extremely popular songs like "Comatose," "Better Than Drugs," "Whispers in the Dark" and "Rebirthing" to name a few. It was nominated for a Grammy in 2007, reached No. 55 on the Billboard 200, and was soon certified Gold by the RIAA.

Hit Albums

Comatose was not the only Skillet album to do well. The band released Awake in 2009, and it quickly reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It also received the award for Top Christian Album at 2011's Billboard Music Awards and sold more over a million copies. The most popular singles from the album were "Monster" and "Hero," both of which became theme songs for events hosted by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE.) Another single, "Awake and Alive," was chosen to be featured on the "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" soundtrack, as well as promotions for sports teams and television shows. In 2013, Skillet followed up with Rise, which had "Sick of It" as the main single. The song won the Dove Award for Rock Song of the Year, while the album was No. 1 on both the Christian Album and Top Rock charts, as well as No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

Show Experience

Skillet is known for having tremendous energy on stage and passion during every song. The mood in the room is uplifting due to the positive messages in their music, and the light shows before the band appears are spectacular. Not all bands are better live, but Skillet truly delivers when performing on stage according to fans. Cooper's command presence keeps fans pumped and rocking hard all night long.
