Comedy Plays at Shaftesbury Theatre - From West Side Story to Rock of Ages

Designed for theatre impresarios and brothers Walter and Frederick Melville, the venue opened as the Prince's Theatre on Boxing Day 1911 with a production of The Three Musketeers. However, it was in 1919 that the venture really took off when it staged almost all of Gilbert and Sullivan's operas with the D'Oyly Opera Company. Disaster struck the now renamed theatre in 1974 when during Hair's long run part of the roof collapsed, sparking fears of redevelopment. However, loyal patrons and artistic trade union Equity petitioned and instead got the building converted to Grade II status.

In the years since, some truly magnificent productions have wowed the crowds. Fred Astaire, Anthony Hopkins and Peter O'Toole have all graced the stage with their incredible acting prowess. In fact, the theatre even paired Rocky Horror Show masterminds Richard O'Brien and Tim Curry who met whilst acting together in Hair.
