Royal Choral Society Biography - Stirring Sounds for 140 Years

This amateur group gave their first performance in May 1872, including in its repertoire the 'Hallelujah Chorus' from Messiah. This sparked the beginnings of the society's iconic tradition of including progressive new works in their performances. Since changing their title to their current moniker they have premiered new pieces from the likes of Giuseppe Verdi and Edward Roxborough. As well as enjoying patronage from the Queen the society has always been directed by a long line of distinguished conductors, from Sir Malcolm Sargent to their current Music Director Richard Cooke.

Whilst maintaining their impressive traditions, this unconventional choir are also on a constant mission to give choral musical a universal appeal, and have often performed at some slightly less traditional locations in the process.
