Rising from the ashes of The Sex Pistols just months after the group disbanded in the late 1970's, John Lydon's band Public Image Ltd went on to become one of the most powerful post-punk acts on the planet. Lydon, the nihilistic non-conformist felt that 'Johnny Rotten' had become a punk rock puppet and a caricature, so set out to redefine music with his new band PiL.
Stripped of fashion and sensationalism, the band flourished in the 1980s, pioneering a completely new industrial-inspired sound far-removed from the music of the Pistols. Public Image Ltd Biography - From Punk to PiL
After The Sex Pistols split in 1978, John Lydon promptly dropped his old moniker Johnny Rotten and set out to reinvent music with his new 'company' Public Image Ltd, also known as PiL. Recruiting former Clash guitarist Keith Levine and bassist Jah Wobble, the group emerged as a reaction to the sleaze and corruption of the music industry. Shunning commercialism by managing themselves and producing their own records, Lydon's anarchic outfit buoyed a natural sonic progression from punk, adhering to no rules and fusing a variety of music styles. Blending rock, folk, dub, dance and industrial sounds in their debut album First Issue, they would shape a new approach to anarchic sentiments.
They went on to release a further eight albums, including their 1979 classic LP Metal Box which is often regarded as one of the best post-punk records of all time. Timeless tracks like 'Rise', 'Public Image' and 'This Is Not a Love Song' have garnered a legion of fans over the years, and their recent revival has introduced a whole new generation to their standout sound.
