From John Gielgud to Judi Dench

Situated on St. Martin's Lane in London's West End, The Noel Coward Theatre opened as The New Theatre in 1903 with a production starring its founder, Charles Wyndham. The classical-style building, which boasts a late Baroque-inspired interior, went on to stage a number of notable plays including Noel Coward's 1920 West End debut, "I'll Leave It to You," John Gielgud's highly acclaimed directorial effort, "Richard of Bordeaux," and numerous Shakespeare productions featuring the likes of Jessica Tandy, Laurence Olivier and Alec Guinness. The theatre temporarily became the home of the Sadler Wells and Old Vic companies during World War II before their rebuilds in the mid-1950s. The venue's most successful production, Lionel Bart's "Oliver," opened in 1960, running for 2,618 shows, while in 1972 Judi Dench starred in six-act comedy "London Assurance" for a year-long stint before its Broadway transfer. The renamed Albery Theatre went on to host 1981's Olivier Award-winning "Children of a Lesser God" and the 1994 revival of Ivan Turgenev's "A Month in the Country." From Shakespeare to jukebox musicals

The venue was given a major refurbishment after being taken over by new management in 2005 and a year later reopened as the Noel Coward Theatre with a European premiere of "Avenue Q". It has since hosted an eclectic array of productions, ranging from Shakespeare favourites "Henry V," "Julius Caesar" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," to 20th Century classics like "Death of a Salesman," "Hay Fever" and "Death Trap," to brand-new plays from Martin McDonagh, John Logan and David Lindsay-Abaire.
