The Tigers have 21 NCAA Tournament appearances dating back to 1998, with 2005 being the only year the team didn't appear. During those tournament appearances, the Tigers won the NCAA championships five times and were conference champions five times as well. In 2019, the team was ranked 13th out of 297 NCAA Division I teams. Over the past decade, the Tigers appeared in the Women's College World Series four times and the NCAA Super Regionals twice. Thanks to great coaching, the Tigers team has produced a long list of star players, like Rachele Fico and Trena Peel. While at LSU, Fico struck out nearly 800 batters and had an ERA of only 1.75. What different leagues or conferences have the Tigers played in?Currently, the LSU Tigers are an NCAA Division I team and have been a member of the Southeastern Conference since 1979. When the team first began playing in 1979, it was an independent softball team for three years and then disbanded for 15 years until 1997.
What is the nature of the rivalry between the LSU and UL softball teams?The biggest rivals of the LSU Tigers are the University of Louisiana Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns softball team. In 2000, the rivalry got heated when Yvette Girouard played her last season at UL and the Cajuns took the game 4-1. The heat continued in 2001 with the Tigers winning 2-1 in the Regional game at Baton Rouge. Currently, the rivalry is healthier and still has plenty of life left in it.
Who is the head coach for the LSU Tigers?Beth Torina has been coaching the LSU Tigers since 2012. Because of her leadership and dedication, the Tigers have proven to be one of the most winning teams in college softball. Under Torina's direction, the team is averaging about 45 wins per season, with two of those seasons being 50-win seasons. Torina got her start as an assistant coach at Stetson University in 2000, during which she was instrumental in getting the Hatters in 2001 to the Atlantic Sun Conference championship. After Stetson, Torina moved to the University of Houston as the team's pitching coach from 2003-2007. In 2008, she got her first head coach gig with Florida International University Golden Panthers and held it until moving to LSU in 2012.
