Trivia

Born Elmer Lee Fields in 1951, this North Carolina native earned the nickname "Little JB" for his striking resemblance to James Brown, both physically and vocally. He even provided additional vocals for the 2014 James Brown biopic Get On Up. In the early '90s, frustrated by a lack of steady work, Fields considered giving up music to run a fish shop. Thankfully, his wife convinced him that he should stick to music.

Band/Singer

Fields built his long, prolific career by collaborating with others, so it's only natural that he's worked with a large roster of some of the best musicians in the business. Fields even spent time as the lead singer of Kool & the Gang on tour. He's also worked with the Hip Huggers, Darrell Banks, Little Royal, Sharon Jones and O.V. Wright. His 1998 album on the Desco label, Let's Get a Groove On found him working with the label's founders Phillipe Lehman and Gabriel Roth. It was this collaboration that helped Fields get back in the game, with more albums and singles such as "Take It or Leave It" and "Let a Man Do What He Wanna Do". When Roth founded Daptone Records with Neal Sugarman, they released four singles for Fields, even lending their talents as backup with their band the Dap-Kings.

Breakthrough

A self-described "country guy," Fields left home and headed to New York at age seventeen in 1968. It was there he met businessman Ray Patterson and produced his first single on Ray's label, Bedford Records. Although Fields wanted to do his own style of music, he was pressured by Patterson to do a cover of James Brown's hit "Bewildered." He acquiesced, as Patterson was paying for everything. The song got Fields noticed and launched his prolific career.

Hit Albums

The flip side of "Bewildered" featured "Tell Her I Love Her," produced by the legendary Kip Anderson. More singles on various labels followed, such as "We Fought for Survival" on Herb Abramson's Festival label and "Everybody Gonna Give Their Thing Away to Somebody" on Sound-Plus Records in Nashville. His fourth single, a ballad titled "Let's Talk It Over" was the one that pushed Fields into the mainstream in 1973 and helped him get closer to his true sound. After a decade of releasing singles, Fields finally released his first album in 1979, Let's Talk It Over. The next two decades found Fields continuing to make music any way he could. Today, Fields has finally found his devoted following and success with the 2009 album My World and the 2011 album Faithful Man.
