Growing up in North Philadelphia, Jill Scott began her career as a spoken word artist and was plucked from obscurity at a poetry event by Amir 'Questlove' Thomson from acclaimed hip hop act The Roots. In 2000, she released her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 to critical acclaim. Tracks like 'A Long Walk' and 'He Loves Me' illustrated her highly distinctive style, which was much slower and more sensual compared to other R&B records of the era. The record went double platinum in the US and was nominated for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards.
Scott's expert weaving of jazz, opera, spoken word and hip hop earned her a legion of fans, and her sophomore album Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol 2. (2004) was equally successful. The lead track 'Cross My Mind' earned her a first Grammy Award for Best Urban R&B Performance, while her cover of Billie Holiday's 1930's classic 'God Bless the Child' earned her another Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance the following year.
As well as her music career, Scott has forayed into the world of films and television. She also set up her own charity, the Blues Babe Foundation, to help underprivileged children pay for school fees between releasing later albums The Light of the Sun (2011) and Woman (2015).
