Jamiroquai tour: British funk legends to play four UK concerts in 2017 after release of eighth album Automaton
It was seven years in the making, but Jamiroquai finally returned in 2017 with the release of their much-anticipated eighth album Automaton. The critically acclaimed record – which includes the title single, plus "Cloud 9" and "Superfresh" – comes 25 years after the band's formation in 1992, and is being followed up by a huge European tour.
As part of that tour, the "future funk" pioneers will play their first UK dates for seven years; with two concerts in early-November (Manchester and Birmingham) being followed by two shows at the O2 in London in early-December. Tickets are in high-demand, and with only four dates to choose from, Jamiroquai fans are well-advised to check StubHub for availability (tickets for the London Roundhouse concert in March sold out in less than a minute!) Jamiroquai: disco-rock veterans still going strong after 25 years in the business
Forming in 1992, Jamiroquai is actually a portmanteau of "jam session" and Native American tribe "Iroquois", and contrary to popular belief, there's more to Jamiroquai than frontman and songwriter Jay Kay. While Jay Kay may be the only founding member remaining, the current, and longest serving members are Derrick McKenzie on drums and Sola Akingbola on percussion, while additions include guitarist Rob Harris, keyboardist Matt Johnson and bassist Paul Turner.
Gaining an eight-album record deal with Sony Music Entertainment, the band's debut came in the form of Emergency on Planet Earth, featuring the singles "When You Gonna Learn", "Too Young to Die", "Blow Your Mind" and "Emergency on Planet Earth", it was the latter two singles that charted in the UK and the US, along with gaining success in countries all over Europe.
With their debut album going platinum, Jamiroquai's success rose from there. Releasing follow-up albums The Return of the Space Cowboy and Travelling Without Moving, Jamiroquai's sound helped to define an era and tracks such as Godzilla's "Deeper Underground", "Supersonic" and of course, their most successful to date "Virtual Insanity".
Ahead of the release of eighth album Automaton Jay Kay told the press: "The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings."
