James Taylor Biography - Finding a Friend in Music
Born to a mother who trained with legendary opera singer Marie Sundelius, it was a natural progression for the young Taylor to find his way into the world of music. His initial classical training on the cello as a child bore a great influence on his style and when he finally picked up the guitar, he combined elements of hymns and carols with his classical inclinations to create a unique finger-picking style.
After suffering from depression he moved to New York to pursue a career in music. Initially playing with The Flying Machine, he decided to try going solo and once again was faced with his demons. Bouncing back, he moved to California and, following a collaboration with Carole King, reached No.3 in the Billboard charts with sophomore album Sweet Baby James. His appeal resonated with female fans who saw in his brooding persona a real-life Heathcliff. His greatest success came in the form of King cover 'You've Got a Friend', which took the top spot on the Billboard charts thanks to his emotionally raw performance of the song.
