The J.I.D story

Born Destin Choice Route in 1990, the rapper grew up in the rap capital of Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned the nickname JID due to often being highly energetic and jittery. Growing up listening to classic soul and disco records before discovering the influential sounds of golden-era New York hip-hop, Route developed his passion and interest in music alongside a promising sporting career, receiving a scholarship to play American football as a defensive back. His first mixtape, "Cakewalk", was released in 2010 and coincided with the rapper being a founding member of musical collective Spillage Village alongside fellow rap game outsiders, such as EARTHGANG. Funding his career with part-time jobs as a pizza delivery boy and call centre worker, the rapper grew his reputation with live shows and mixtapes and eventually released his debut album "The Never Story" in 2017 on J. Cole’s Dreamville record label.
