Heart Biography - Pioneers for Women in Rock
Forming in the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s, Heart started out as an all-male outfit before drafting in musically-minded sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. Taking inspiration from groundbreaking artists like Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, the band set about crafting a unique sound blending elements of heavy metal with folk music. The success of their debut album Dreamboat Annie in Canada paved the way for a massive US and UK breakthrough, and by 1975 Heart were a platinum-selling prospect off the back of singles such as 'Crazy For You' and 'Magic Man'.
In the 1980s, the band enjoyed a massive revival in popularity thanks to the synth-driven rock epic 'Alone'. Voted one of the greatest power ballads of all time, the song soared to the top of the Billboard Charts and continues to garner airplay today. Heart continued topping the charts through the '80s and '90s with tracks like 'These Dreams' and 'if Looks Could Kill', proving their legacy with sell-out arena tours.
