Outstanding productions at Duke of Yorks Theatre
Originally called the Trafalgar Square Theatre, the Duke of Yorks Theatre was renamed in 1895 for the future King George V, who approved of the name change by referring to the theatre as a 'right royal building'. Ever since then it has been part of London's theatre royalty, having played host to some significant productions such as David Belasco's one-act play 'Madame Butterfly', which would later become Puccini's world-famous opera. J.M. Barrie's play 'Peter Pan' was performed every year from 1904 to 1915, and indeed one of the Duke of Yorks Theatre bars is named for the writer. Other famous actors to have trodden the boards here have included Charlie Chaplin, Eileen Atkins, John Gielgud, Felicity Kendal and Jeremy Irons, while 2018 saw a staging of 'King Lear' that marked Ian McKellan's Shakespearean swansong. With a broad spectrum of productions ranging from light-hearted comedy to intense dramas, Duke of Yorks Theatre tickets will delight theatre lovers of all tastes.
