Chris Rock: Total Blackout tour could be biggest yet
Born in South Carolina, Chris Rock's family moved to Brooklyn when he was still a baby. With his mum working as a teacher and social worker and his father a truck driver, the family settled in the working-class area of Bedford-Stuyvesant. With three younger brothers, Tony (fellow actor/comedian), Kenny and Jordan, all of which work within the entertainment industry, the entertainment bug really does run in the family.
Beginning his career in 1984, doing stand-up in New York's 'Catch a Rising Star' chain of comedy clubs, the comedian slowly accrued a number of fans and supporters, landings the odd acting role in shows such as Miami Vice. Upon his discovery by acting and comic legend, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock found himself with a powerful friend and mentor, who in turn gave him a role in Beverly Hills Cop II.
Earning a spot on the legendary sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live in 1990, Rock helped to define an era of the show, joined by the likes of Chris Farley, David Spade, Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler, he became known as one of the "Bad Boys of SNL".
The added national exposure helped Rock to become more popular than ever, as he found standup success all over the US, and eventually the rest of the world.
Best of Chris Rock
Releasing his first comedy album, Born Suspect back in 1991, Chris Rock has come a long way since his humble beginnings. Only three years later, Rock earned his first HBO comedy special, Big Ass Jokes, and yet more comedy appeal.
It wouldn't be until 1996's Bring the Pain, that he really grabbed the attention of comic critics and a mass audience with his candid focus on subjects such as the O.J. Simpson murder case and race relations in the US proving particularly powerful.
