Born in France in 1803, this celebrated composer turned his back on a career in medicine to pursue a passion for music held from a young age. Taking inspiration from the Romantic movement so popular at the time he created iconic works, from Symphonie Fantastique to his most famous, a commemoration of those who fell in the second French revolution. He broke the boundaries of orchestral expression and during his career worked as both a composer and conductor. Appreciation for the music and its romantic symbolism continued long after his death in 1869, and it remains some of the most influential compositions in history.

After 2015 saw the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Goldsmiths Choral Union and Brighton Festival Chorus pay homage to what is widely considered his greatest work, performing it once again at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. On Remembrance Sunday, Francois-Xavier Roth leads three of the UK's best choruses and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the 90 minute composition, framed by the voice of German tenor Maximilian Schmitt.
