Bastille: UK chart toppers
Inspired by movie soundtracks, Bastille was initially the solo project of film enthusiast Dan Smith. Named after Bastille Day, which is celebrated on 14 July, the date of Smith's birthday, his music first gained exposure after he paired it with edited footage from his favourite old movies, before he recruited a full band in 2010 to fully flesh out his vision. Emerging with debut 7" single "Flaws/Icarus", then their Twin Peaks-inspired EP Laura Palmer, they were soon turning heads on the live circuit after building a huge following on YouTube.
Scoring a breakthrough hit with "Flaws" in early 2013, the group then crashed the upper echelons of the charts, hitting number two with the huge single "Pompeii". This success paved the way for their debut album Bad Blood to take the number one spot in the UK albums chart, catapulting the band to national stardom and prominent spots at festivals such as Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight.
The band embarked on their Wild Wild World Tour in July 2016, with second album Wild World reaching UK number one and chart top 10s across the globe in September. Known for breaking into unique covers of '90s R&B hits on tour, their live shows are as spontaneous and surprising as they are shout-a-long brilliant.
