A multi-instrumentalist who is from Philadelphia in the United States, Alex G began his musical career working from his bedroom, creating low-fi sounds and indie rock tunes. For the early part of his career, Alexander Giannascoli, better known as Alex G, worked on building up his audience through self-released material, primarily using the Bandcamp online musical sharing platform. The critically acclaimed artist is able to play guitar and drums to a high standard. As well as singing, he is a keyboard player, a percussionist and a bassist who can arrange his own works.
Alex G's early life
Born in 1993, Alex G was brought up in Havertown, Pennsylvania. The musician began recording his own music when he was just 13 years of age. This followed his parents purchasing a computer for him to do so, coupled with the gift of a guitar, given to him by his brother. During his high school career, Alex G made enough new material on his computer to put together two entire albums. During this formative part of his career, Alex G would work in a variety of styles. For example, he experimented with his sister on some techno tracks, as well as getting into Gothic rock for a while.
Alex G's output and mainstream breakthrough
In 2011, Alex G put out his first track on Bandcamp. It was entitled “Sandy”. After this, he would go on to release four albums and a one-off EP on the site. Philadelphia magazine chose to highlight his 2012 album, entitled Trick. This work had already gained some notoriety through people sharing it online but the mainstream press picking up on it only served to widen Alex G's appeal. It was around this time that the Feeder magazine referred to the musician as one of the best-kept secrets in contemporary songwriting.
In 2014, Alex G put out his first album on a real record label. This work was entitled DSU and came out on an independent label based in Brooklyn. In order to promote the work, the studio-based performer undertook his first major tour, which included a string of dates in North America as well as many more in Europe. Alex G referred to this album as his best work so far. It also attracted much interest from the mainstream music press. For instance, articles appeared about it in Rolling Stone magazine. As a result, in 2014, Alex G dropped out from his course at Temple University in order to carry on with his burgeoning professional musical career.
Alex G switched to a new record label, Domino, in 2015. Partly as a result of this change, the young performer was booked to play at the prestigious South by Southwest showcase that summer. In August of that year, Alex G announced that his first album for the label would be entitled Beach Music. He has since followed it up with another album for Domino, called Rocket.
