ASAP Rocky: critically acclaimed hit maker
Born in Harlem, a district of New York synonymous with the history of hip-hop, Rakim Mayers was perhaps always destined for stardom given that his name tips its hat to legendary duo Eric B. and Rakim. After enduring a difficult childhood, by 2007 he had put together his crew of fellow rappers, producers and visual arts experts, ASAP Mob, an acronym pertaining to an ambiguous meaning.
After a few years growing their reputation and putting out underground releases, in 2011 an unofficial compilation titled Deep Purple was followed by his first official single, "Peso". "Purple Swag" followed months later, resulting in a multi-million dollar deal with RCA Records. From there, ASAP Rocky started to cross over to a wider trans-Atlantic audience, resulting in an appearance on the BBC's annual Sound of... poll in 2012 and a debut UK gig at London's Cargo which saw fans queuing around the block to catch a glimpse of his show.
Cementing his place as one of his generation's most important artists, his critically acclaimed debut Long. Live.
