Harry Hill: laughter is the best medicine

After winning over the nation with his zany brand of humour, madcap medic-turned-comedian Harry Hill is back on the stand-up circuit, wowing audiences with his unique stage show. But there's a twist, his new show will be aimed solely at kids. Titled How To Be Funny – For Kids!, the tour coincides with the release of his new children’s book, Matt Millz Stands Up.

"I can’t tell you how many letters I get from children asking me how you become a stand-up comic, which is partly why I wrote the Matt Millz books," the comic said. "Now I’m taking it to them direct! Brings your jokes and an umbrella – there will be fun."

Harry Hill: from barmy stand-up to TV burps

After a rather nomadic childhood that included a stint in Hong Kong, Hill initially entered the world of work as a doctor. After growing frustrated in his role, he quit the profession and turned to comedy. Medicine's loss would prove to be the entertainment industry's gain - and in 1992 he scooped the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer after a series of show-stopping performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It proved the perfect springboard to a career in TV, with Hill (real name Matthew Keith Hall) appearing on the BBC shows Fruit Fancies and Fruit Corner before landing his own sketch show on Channel 4 in 1997. He would soon become known for his surreal take on humour, a bonkers mix of puppet-based puns, celebrity send-ups and running jokes.

Harry crossed over to a more mainstream audience with his next project, TV Burp. A sideways look at the week's television shows, its winning mix of sketches and observational humour proved a hit with audiences. Originally broadcast late at night mid-week, it proved so popular that ITV moved it to a Saturday evening prime time spot.
