The D'Oyly Carte Empire
The state-of-the-art theatre was built by the enigmatic impresario, talent agent, hotelier and composer Richard D'Oyly Carte and opened in 1881. Carte began his career in music publishing and instrument manufacture under his father before branching into talent management and promotion. He went on to establish the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which ran for over one hundred years, and is responsible for bringing together the talents of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, dramatist and composer behind the famed Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, which he built the Savoy Theatre to host. Most celebrated are 'The Mikado', 'The Pirates of Penzance' and 'H.M.S. Pinafore' from a collection of fourteen works by the comic masters. Carte later constructed the Savoy Hotel by the side of his theatre, as well as further luxury hotels and the Palace Theatre London, home to the modern musical phenomenon Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The Savoy Theatre staged many more works outside of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas into the 20th century, including 'Salome' by Oscar Wilde in 1931 and the Noël Coward ghost comedy 'Blithe Spirit' a decade later. Shakespeare, dramatic plays and musicals followed, making the Savoy the iconic theatre it is today. Use StubHub to buy or sell Savoy Theatre London tickets now!
Fire, restoration and the modern era of theatre
During renovations in 1990, a fire tragically wiped out the Savoy Theatre, apart from the stage and backstage rooms. It was proposed that a new building in up-to-date architectural style be built, although the theatre's insurers, along with English Heritage, overruled the idea. Restoration began with plans to maintain the original design as faithfully as possible and the theatre reopened in 1993 as a Grade II listed building, staging a royal gala (Wayne Sleep's 'Savoy Suite') to celebrate and later the 1993 World Chess Championship. The renewed theatre featured an extra floor added to house a health club and a swimming pool for the adjacent hotel. Into the 21st century, shows have included 'Carousel', 'Legally Blonde' and Dreamgirls. There's plenty more to come, that's for sure.
