Home to the Royal Northern Sinfonia
Part of the Quayside development which also features the Millennium Bridge and a contemporary art centre, the Sage Gateshead boasts three different performance spaces under its distinctive curved glass roof; a 1700-seater and 450-seater hall and smaller rehearsal room. Largely funded by the National Lottery, the venue was opened in 2004 and instantly grabbed attention for its award-winning dome-shaped design from esteemed architect Norman Foster. As well as staging various pop and rock, comedy, theatre and family events, the building has also become a political party conference favourite, with Labour holding their 2005 spring event there and the Liberal Democrats following suit in 2012. In 2010 it welcomed over 1500 students through its doors for the National Union of Students' National Conference. It's also home to one of Britain's most acclaimed chamber orchestras, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, who in 2014 collaborated with troubadour John Grant for a show later released as a live album.
