Experience theatre through the ages
The Lyric Theatre was designed by C.J. Phipps, an English theatrical architect who was one of the leading figures of his profession during the mid to late 1800s. Phipps was also the brains behind the likes of the Royal Strand Theatre, the Prince of Wales Theatre and the Savoy Theatre, the first building open to the public ran entirely by electricity. Henry Leslie produced the construction of the Lyric using the profits from the 1886 comic opera Dorothy, written and composed by B.C. Stephenson and Alfred Cellier, which he eventually brought to his new venue in 1888. The Lyric became the second theatre to be built on this part of Shaftsbury Avenue and now remains the oldest on the road. Nevertheless, it maintains a lot of its authentic features and still uses water to utilise its iron curtain. In 1960, the building was listed grade two by English Heritage. The Lyric staged many in its formative years, before moving into light comic plays, musicals and straight dramas. Recent successes include Thriller Live, The Night of the Iguana starring Woody Harrelson and Showstopper! The Improvised Musical. In 2005, the Lyric Theatre was purchased from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group by Nimax Theatres.
