De La Soul Biography - Rap Pioneers Through and Through

When Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoer and Vincent Mason met in high school in Long Island, few people would guess that together they would go on to become one of the most influential hip-hop acts of all time. But just two years after they formed, they released 1989's 3 Feet High And Rising, an undisputed masterpiece which is still considered one of the greatest albums - in any genre - of all time. Featuring signature song 'The Magic Number', the album showcased a hippy-esque take on hip-hop that was at odds with the macho standards of rap.

The trio went on to blaze a trail through the '90s with three more albums, then received a critical resurgence with 2000's Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, featuring the smash single 'All Good' with a guest spot by Chaka Khan. More recently they have been feted by musical chameleon Damon Albarn, who enlisted them to play support slots and guest with him live on stage in arenas across the world for Gorillaz' Plastic Beach tour.
