Although they're firm friends now, Gass and Black's relationship is actually rooted in rivalry. The pair met while performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the late '80s for the same theatre troupe, where tensions over their respective positions in the group came to the fore. However, after settling their differences they decided to form a band, initially playing covers sets in bars in and around Los Angeles. Their big break came in 1997, when they secured their own television programme, which significantly raised the profile of their live shows. Meanwhile, one of their concerts was attended by rock god Dave Grohl, who ended up collaborating on their self-titled 2001 debut album. After the success of the LP, a follow-up titled The Pick Of Destiny also spawned a full feature film in 2006 exploring the tale of their hit song 'Tribute'.
