The start of the new wave of theatre

In 1946, right after World War Two, theatrical director, actor, manager and teacher George Devine formed a Young Vic Company, a branch of the Old Vic, with the intention of producing and performing classic plays aimed for audiences between the ages of nine and fifteen. After only lasting for two years, however, it was dissolved. It would be in 1969 when the then Administrative Director of the National Theatre Frank Dunlop founded the Young Vic Theatre, which maintained a position as part of the National Theatre until 1974, when it became an independent institution. Here, the Young Vic developed its previous cause to produce approachable theatre at a high quality yet low cost in an informal environment aimed at young audiences, not necessarily children. Since its emergence, the Young Vic has been at the forefront of the adaption of classical plays with highly experimental and innovative productions and has had many high-profile actors grace its stage, including Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Michael Sheen. The list even stretches beyond the world of acting, with infamous rock band The Who performing free concerts to rehearse what would become their influential album Who's Next in early 1971. A stage for any occasion

Since its first production under the National Theatre in 1970 (Molière's The Cheats of Scapin), the Young Vic has staged a variety of works and adaptations, including The Glass Menargerie, Hamlet and A View from the Bridge. In addition to its main auditorium, where larger productions such as these take place, the Young Vic has two smaller spaces for a more intimate experience. The Maria, named after Maria Bjornson (the iconic theatre designer who worked on the first 1970 Molière production), holds 150 seats, while The Clare is much smaller with just 70.
