An English rapper who was born in 1985, Wretch 32 is the stage name of Jermaine Scott Sinclair. A resident of Tottenham in North London when he was growing up, Sinclair is the son of a locally known DJ who specialised in reggae music. The artist was raised surrounded by music and went on to join a grime collective known as Combination Chain Gang. He later formed his own group called The Movement, with Scorcher, a grime artist and actor from Enfield. In 2011, Wretch 32 began his solo career. In addition to his rapping, the artist is a singer and songwriter who can operate just as easily in the genre of R 'n' B as he can in grime and hip-hop.
Wretch 32's career in music
Wretch 32 put out his debut solo single with the featured vocals of L Marshall. “Traktor” was released early in 2011 and rose to number five in the UK Singles Chart in January of that year. It was a number two hit in the UK independent releases chart and was selected by the BBC Radio DJ Reggie Yates as a 'Weekend Anthem'. Wretch 32 made a video, which was directed by Ben Newman, to promote the song. Largely because of his success with “Traktor”, the rapper was named by MTV for their Brand New Artist award of 2011. The BBC also nominated Wretch 32 for their ‘Sound Of 2011’.
“Traktor” was the lead single from Black and White, an album that came out in August of 2011. Wretch 32 had two other top five singles from the LP, which was a huge commercial success as a result of these hits. In the first week after Black and White went on sale, it achieved sales that were in excess of 25,000 copies. Put out on the Ministry of Sound label, it got to the top spot in the UK R 'n' B Charts. The following year, with the Olympic Games being held in the UK’s capital, Wretch 32 featured in advertising campaigns for two major sports brands. At the BET Awards of that year, the rapper won the Best International Act prize.
Over the course of the next few years, the rapper toured all over the UK, often filling up arenas and performing on the same bill as other high-profile grime artists. In 2016, Wretch 32 returned with a new studio album. Entitled Growing Over Life, this work had a number of singles taken from it, including “6 Words”, “All A Dream” and “Liberation”. A new album, which was given the title of FR32, followed in 2017.
