Featuring spellbinding songs such as “No One Mourns a Wicked”, “Dancing Through Life”, “I'm Not That Girl” and “As Long As You're Mine”, as well as the show-stopping “Gravity Defying”, Wicked Dublin is the touring version of the smash hit musical. Originally staged on Broadway in New York, the production moved to London in 2006, when it was put on at the Apollo Theatre. A touring version of this production began in 2013, which included stagings all over the UK as well as in the Republic of Ireland. Dublin saw its first run of Wicked in that year, and further schedules of the long-running show have been booked since. With technical elements such as ornate costumes, fantastic lighting and make-up effects, Wicked is among the most popular musicals on either side of the Atlantic since the turn of the century.
Wicked Dublin's development and staging
With a cast of top-quality performers, Wicked Dublin is the same production that can be seen in the UK, including the West End, where it has broken many records. The multi-award winning show has delighted audiences all over the globe and versions of it in languages other than English are now commonplace.
The music in Wicked is a key part of its success. The show's composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, devised the musical after he had read the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire called Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Schwartz immediately understood the commercial and creative potential of a dramatic adaptation of the book, itself an extension of the ideas expressed in the kid's story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which had been successfully adapted in the 1930s. Unfortunately for Schwartz, the writer had already sold the adaptation rights to a Hollywood studio, which planned to make a live-action feature film of the story. Nevertheless, the composer was able to gain consent for a stage production of the book and a musical version of Wicked was born.
Wicked Dublin's plaudits
The original Broadway run of the musical was nominated for no fewer than 10 prestigious Tony Awards in 2004. These included Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, Most Original Score and Best Choreography. The London production won the Audience Award for Most Popular Show at the Olivier Awards ceremony that was held in 2010. Critical reception for the touring version of the musical has been just as favourable, including in the Irish press. In 2005, the recording made of the original production gained the Grammy Award for the Best Musical Show Album.
