A multiple Tony and Olivier Award winner
War Horse author Michael Morpurgo admitted that he once described the idea of adapting his emotional World War I tale for the stage as "mad." However, the show has become something of a theatrical phenomenon following its 2007 premiere at the National Theatre in London. It broke the West End record for the highest weekly gross achieved by a play. It has won multiple awards at both the Tony and Olivier Awards, including Best Play at the former. And its success has transferred around the world, with Germany, Australia, China and Canada just a few of the countries that have staged popular versions. It's also been made into a full-length feature film by none other than Steven Spielberg, and in 2014, it was given the BBC Proms treatment with a special concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. By the end of its first full decade, the show had been watched by an astonishing seven million people worldwide. Galloping life-sized horses
In 2017, directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris took War Horse out on tour to celebrate the show's tenth anniversary, starting at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury. This new production saw Thomas Dennis take on the leading role of Albert, the boy who attempts to bring his beloved horse back to his Devon hometown from the trenches of First World War France, with his one-time co-star Jo Castleton (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) playing his mother Rose, celebrated folk singer Bob Singer portraying Song Man and Scott and Bailey actor Marcus Adolphy appearing as Colonel Strauss. The impressive cast was accompanied by the jaw-dropping sight of the galloping life-size horse puppets created by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, while other behind-the-scenes names included lighting designer Paule Constable, set designer Rae Smith and composer Adrian Sutton. If you're not one of the seven million people to have enjoyed the visually-stunning and tear-jerking spectacle, or you simply want to watch it again, then check out the range of War Horse Birmingham tickets available on StubHub today.
