Torres is on the Rise
Arguably the most important asset in a musical career is a powerful, beautiful voice. That's why American Idol was one of the most watched shows for many years in a row; it's why the likes of Adele and Beyonce are now household names. While the quest to find the next great voice seems to never end, Mackenzie Scott, better known as Torres, is a good candidate. The American indie rock musician from the deep south town of Macon, Georgia, is undeniably in possession of the pipes and the star quality that make singer/songwriters big hits.
Torres regularly travels around the United States and Europe and has garnered more attention from fans and critics over the past few years. Recently she has been touring the East Coast of the United States and major cities in Canada, playing dates at Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Union Transfer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the infamous Bowery Ballroom in New York City. While she is better known in the southern United States at the moment, there will be a growing demand for Torres tickets in the near future as more people become familiar with her voice and her music.
Scott didn't take singing seriously until she ended up in the high school play Fiddler on the Roof and was discovered to have an incredible voice. Her family's praises after that performance inspired her to begin playing guitar and singing hymns in church services and at a nursing home every Saturday. Through this practice, Scott found her passion and decided to go for it as a professional musician when she headed off to college.
While attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, Scott built a solid musical foundation. She recorded her eponymous debut album in five days at Tony Joe White's home studio in Franklin, Tennessee. A number of different musicians often play with her and she has been featured on other albums as a guest artist, like on Sharon Van Etten's album "Are We There?"
After her debut first album began to get a lot of attention in the independent music world, Scott began to tour more extensively and caught the attention of larger acts who asked her to open their shows. These bands included Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and Okkervil River, as well as Sharon Van Etten for support on her hit album which rose to number 25 on the US charts. This exposure is what has helped to vault Scott's music into more of a spotlight.
The self-titled debut album received high critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, who raved about her single "Honey," and the power and energy of her vocal range. Music blogs including Beats Per Minute, Drowned in Sound, and Pretty Much Amazing also raved about her talents while noting her youth. The single "New Skin" has also garnered immediate acclaim from her growing legion of fans.
Despite Torres being a singer/songwriter and having a relatively small band, her powerful voice is one that can fill a large and small venue. Her music also has a wide range, with tracks that are both fast and slow paced, moody and upbeat. While serious fans will undoubtedly sing along, those who aren't as familiar with her music will most likely be in awe of her voice, which only appears to be getting better as she matures.
