The Vaselines Will Cure Your Itch for Awesome Rock
The Vaselines are a dynamic alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. The group has maintained a cult-like following for more than 20 years, and continues to sell out shows across the globe. Since the group has been producing new music since 1986 -- including a new album in 2014 -- their shows provide a perfect mix of nostalgia and modern-day fun.
Schedule
The Vaselines reformed in 2006 after a 16 year hiatus. The band often tours the UK and Europe, making stops in major cities such as London, Paris, and Berlin. They are also known to play lively shows in venues like The Caves in Edinburgh. Because their concerts have consistently sold out for many, many years, it's a good idea to purchase The Vaselines tickets well in advance.
Trivia
Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee formed the group now known as The Vaselines as a duo before disbanding in 1990 to pursue their individual careers. Now a quartet, the band reunited in 2006 and has been performing together ever since.
Band
Songwriters Kelly and McKee formed The Vaselines in 1986. Since more is always better, the two later invited bassist James Seenan and drummer Charlie Kelly to join the band. Although relatively unknown, the band was able to achieve a cult-like following because of their association with one of the most iconic musical groups of all time: Nirvana. Not only did Nirvana cover two of The Vaselines' songs on an album, but the band also opened for Nirvana on numerous occasions. After an extended hiatus, Mckee and Kelly reunited in 2006 to play joint songs in an effort to promote their individual careers. Due to the success and fun the duo had together, they invited the rest of the gang to join them again. Since then, The Vaselines have been touring throughout the UK and have released several new albums.
Breakthrough
Because of their eclectic style, The Vaselines were almost instantly noticed by Nirvana. Although The Vaselines lacked the money and marketing needed to be big-time stars in the UK, the band was able to capitalise on their relationship with the notorious group. In 1990, the band opened for Nirvana in Edinburgh and was able to generate a popular fan following. Although it has been reported that, in their heyday, the band made little money beyond royalties from Nirvana playing their songs, The Vaselines say they would have done nothing different. They remain a part of rock history, as a younger generation discovers the band that once influenced rock icons.
Hit Albums
The Vaselines have flown under the radar because their most well-known songs are associated with Nirvana. Perhaps the band's biggest hit was the release of their two EPs in 1987 and 1988, Son of a Gun and Dying for It, which reached No. 26 and No. 11 on the UK Indie Chart, respectively. Since reuniting in 2006, The Vaselines have released three new albums in 2009, 2010, and 2014. The band's 2014 album, V for Vaselines, is a collection of short punk songs.
Show Experience
Because of their long history of playing together, attending a Vaselines concert is a one-of-a-kind experience. Fans have described their concerts as extremely unique because of the exceptional level of audience involvement. With their powerful voices, onstage presence, and exceptional instrumental abilities, The Vaselines put on a must-see show.
