The Staves: sister act come of age
One of the most talked about folk acts in recent memory, The Staves have been making their mark on the British music scene since the release of their debut album Dead and Born and Grown in 2012. As children growing up in Watford, three sisters Emily, Jessica and Camilla Stavely learned to harmonize by singing along to their parents favourite Americana records, including the timeless hits of Simon and Garfunkel and Nash and Young. Incorporating a very distinct transatlantic influence into their style, the teenagers made their live debut at an open-mic night at their local pub and were so well-received they were invited to perform a regular slot.
Supporting the likes of The Civil Wars and Bon Iver - and performed as the warm-up act for Florence and the Machine on Florence's How Big Tour - the band received critical praise for their enigmatic live performances, while second album If I Was received similarly positive reviews and was produced by Justin Vernon of the latter Canadian band. After a memorable Glastonbury debut, the band released The Way is Read - a full-length album created in conjunction with NYC-based chamber music ensemble yMusic - and continue to tour the world.
