A new landmark for Middlesbrough’s skyline
Originally named the Middlesbrough Theatre of Varieties, Colonel S. A. Sadler – then Mayor of Middlesbrough – laid the first stone of the building in 1897. The prospect of such a marvellous new structure in the town was a cause for great excitement in the city, where crowds gathered to enjoy a special concert to mark the beginning of construction. The theatre’s architect, Ernest Runtz (acclaimed for his work across the UK on theatres such as London’s Adelphi and the New Theatre in Cardiff), saw his plans come to life over the next 14 months leading up to its opening in 1899. Celebrations commenced alongside a lavish variety show featuring a wealth of comedians, singers, dancers and acrobats including Lily Langtry and Naomi Ethardo. The theatre remained a venue for variety performances over many years and saw the likes of Laurel & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin grace its stage. After a period of disuse, local businessman Barry Faulkner purchased the property in 1991. Although the building underwent significant renovations, it still stays true to its historical architectural roots and is now one of the UK’s most stylish venues and clubs.
