Melvins Biography - Hear 'Honey Bucket' Live
The group, originally a trio, were formed in Aberdeen, Washington, the same town that would later spawn Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Lead singer and guitarist Buzz Osbourne - or King Buzzo - was joined by Matt Lukin on bass and Mike Dillard on drums. As forerunners to the grunge wave, they started their career playing Cream and Jimi Hendrix covers before turning to a heavier sound that followed in the footsteps of Black Sabbath. They were soon spotted by C/Z Records and added to their Deep Six compilation of up-and-coming Washington bands. Their debut EP Six Songs followed a year later, with first studio album Gluey Porch Treatment arriving in 1987.
Despite being outsiders, the group were hugely influential to musicians like Kurt Cobain - who even worked for them as a roadie - and bands such as Mudhoney. As well as securing major recording contracts and high-profile collaborations, the group enjoyed pursuing individual projects such as Osbourne's band Fantomas. With a 30-year history of exceptional music under their belts, a chance to see these gifted artists shouldn't be missed. Get your Melvins tickets at StubHub UK.
