An Event that Changed the World
Before the global financial crisis of 2008, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. was the fourth-largest investment bank in America, until its legacy drastically ended when it filed for bankruptcy, sending global markets plummeting. This was the largest bankruptcy filing in US history. Lehman Brothers had been operational since 1850 - 158 years before its demise in 2008. The Lehman Trilogy is a three-hour stage masterpiece following the three Lehman Brothers from their humble Bavarian beginnings and arrival in 1840s Montgomery, Alabama (where it all started from the opening of a general store) to the rise and fall of an empire. The brothers soon moved into the railway, cotton, coffee and banking business after their migration to the land of the free, where the power of an entire corporation was passed on from generation to generation. In the 1960s, a trading division was created and run by members outside of the family, eventually leading to the fall of the mortgage bond market. This epic family tale comes to London's Lyttelton Theatre in an astonishingly well-written, acted and directed piece of theatre. World-Class Actors at Their Peak
The Lehman Trilogy is a play originally written by Italian playwright Stefano Massini, who researched finance, economics and Jewish culture for over three years to be able to piece the story together. Its English language adaptation is by Ben Power, an associate director of London's National Theatre since 2010, who collaborates with Sam Mendes, director of Skyfall and 2014's King Lear (now showing at the Duke of Yorks Theatre starring Ian McKellen), to bring this incredible saga to the British stage. The play stars only three actors: Simon Russel Beale, described as the greatest living stage actor of his generation and previous Mendes collaborator; Adam Godley, star of The BFG and Charlie and the Choclate Factory; and Ben Miles, notable for his role as Peter Townsend in the hit show The Crown. The actors play the original Lehman brothers, their sons and their grandsons in the three-hour long production. It's a treat for theatre lovers and history buffs alike!
