Today's fans take it for granted that they'll invest in The Get Up Kids tickets, but at one time, the band's name was actually The Suburban Get Up Kids. This name was quickly changed when the original members of the group realized the letter "G" was used far less often in band names than the letter "S." Hoping to set themselves apart, they decided to ditch the Suburban portion of their name and simply stick with The Get Up Kids. Typically, a debut album takes a couple of weeks or even a few months to record, but The Get Up Kids were speed demons in their early days. They recorded their first full-length album Four Minute Mile in just two days!

Huge players in the emo scene's second wave, the members of The Get Up Kids strive to prove that they are more than a quintessential emo band. Over the years, the band's music has taken on a more nuanced, layered sound, with the lyrics also featuring the group's newfound maturity. However, despite their greater focus on introspective lyrics and softer melodies, current band members Matt Pryor, Rob Pope, Ryan Pope, Jim Suptic, and James Dewees aim to retain that infectious energy that made the group such a hit in the first place.

Breakthrough

The Get Up Kids began when Ryan Pope, Rob Pop, and Jim Suptic of the high school band Kingpin joined up with Matt Pryor of Secret Decoder Ring to form an exciting new emo band. They toured extensively throughout the Midwest, forming close relationships with such bands as Braid, Coalesce, and Rocket Fuel Is The Key. The band attracted a fair amount of attention with the debut release Four Minute Mile, but the talented musicians really hit it big with sophomore album Something To Write Home About. This album was a commercial and critical success, reaching a peak spot of 31 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.

Hit Albums

The Get Up Kids' first album Four Minute Mile attracted a great deal of interest from major record labels, due to its sincerity and appealing emotional energy. Despite multiple offers, the band opted to work with the small indie label Vagrant Records on sophomore album Something To Write Home About. This was a great decision, for the radio-friendly release proved an instant hit. Eager to try out a mellow sound, the group pursued a slower approach for third full-length album On A Wire. This was followed by the introspective Guilt Show. The band took a significant break before returning with There Are Rules, which departed from the group's usual lyrical focus on romance.

Show Experience

The members of the Get Up Kids absolutely adore their fans, who are encouraged to sing along at their live shows. In fact, lead singer Matt Pryor has admitted to occasionally backing off on the vocals so that the audience members can take over. In addition to interacting with their fans, the musicians also interact with each other, thereby proving that their bond remains as strong as ever. The cohesiveness of the group adds to the overarching sense of energy in any venue at which they play.
