Mike Joyce, Andy Rourke, and Johnny Marr were inspired to form The Smiths after seeing The Church play at Leadmill Sheffield in 1982! That is a pretty big claim to fame! The guest lists at their shows have included other famous artists too - The Killers, The Smashing Pumpkins, Afghan Whigs, and Brian Jonestown Massacre, just to name a few!
The band has seen many variations, but the founding members are Steve Kilbey on lead vocals and bass guitar and Peter Koppes and Marty Wilson-Piper on guitars. They've had a number of different drummers come in and out of the band. They originally wanted to name the band "The Church of Man," but settled on the shortened name instead. The founding members are all from Sydney except for Wilson-Piper who is from Liverpool.
The band started playing low-key gigs in Sydney in the early 80s while they recorded a 4-track demo that Kilbey sent into Australian record label ATV Northern. This led to getting attention from Parlophone, who they ended up signing with, launching their career. It didn't take long for their early singles to start topping the charts - the single "The Unguarded Moment" because a Top Ten Hit in Australia and they have been a huge success ever since. They are a unique band because their sound crossed over so distinctively from new wave to a more psychedelic prog rock sound. Consequently, they have two very distinct fan bases that adore them for different reasons.
Their debut album, Of Skins and Heart, saw tremendous success in Australia and the band was an instant hit. It went gold and solidified their name in the industry. Their second album, The Blurred Crusade, came out in 1982 and peaked at No. 10 on the charts. The first single off the album, "Almost with You," climbed to No. 21 on the singles charts. They released over 20 albums and then took a hiatus before releasing their latest album, Further/Deeper, which Rolling Stone Australia gave four stars.
The Church have been performing for decades and know how to light up a stage. They have a vast repertoire of music to choose from, so you'll get to hear a wide variety of songs spanning their whole career. They are known for their psychedelic stage theatrics and their serious devotion to the quality of their live sound. Expect to find an audience of hardcore fans that have been cheering these guys along for years, as well as a lot of hand claps and swaying to the melodies."
