More About Sunday for Sammy - Going Strong After 14 Years
This series of biennial variety concerts were originally intended to celebrate the life and work of the Tyneside actor Sammy Johnson, who died suddenly whilst jogging in 1998 at the age of 49. The popular performer - who starred in the cult hit comedy sitcom Auf Wiedersehen, Pet - had a profound impact upon his fellow North East co-stars Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail, who decided to organise a special concert in his memory at Newcastle City Hall in 2000. They invited all their friends and used the money to support the young performers from the region who were in desperate need of financial help. The success of the concerts and the worthwhile cause sparked a huge surge of public support, generating a demand to repeat the show every two years afterwards.
The artists that appear in each concert are never publicised before each event, but that only makes the concerts even more exciting. Every show features a host of Geordie stars such as presenter Donna Air, Emmerdale's Chris Chittell, Loose Women host Denise Welsh, actress Angela Lonsdale and Tyneside personality Christopher Fairbank. Expect funny comedy sketches from treasured stars plus singing and dance performances from young amateurs hoping to make it big.
